Israel Intercepts Missile from Yemen Early Wednesday
In a military statement, Israeli forces confirmed, "identified the launch of a missile from Yemen toward Israeli territory, aerial defence systems are operating to intercept the threat," later adding that residents were "permitted to leave protected spaces in all areas of the country."
Media outlets reported that the missile was successfully intercepted, with no casualties or property damage reported.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, announced missile and drone strikes against Israel over the past weekend, marking their first attacks in the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military also stated on Monday that two drones originating from Yemen had been intercepted.
The Houthis’ presence in Yemen gives them the potential to disrupt shipping through the Red Sea, as they previously did during heightened conflict involving Israel and Gaza. They have also threatened maritime traffic in the Suez Canal, which passes through a narrow strait off Yemen’s coast.
